Off The Top Of My Head
Servanthood
By Jerry Evans
After being in the "business" of providing music for God's chosen servants for the past 23 years, I find myself asking, "What purpose does God have for me being here?" As I have observed so many of you over these years, I am convinced that my level of musical talent cannot approach the hem of most of your garments. There is a constant realization that with the diversity in music today that no matter how hard I try, it is difficult to recommend something that would be useful to all or even most. Now this is not a self-defecation article. As much as I like to put you, our customers, on a pedestal, that is not the intent. I am just trying to establish what it is God intends for J & J music and me to be.
As I thought about this two events came to mind. The first was many years ago when we ask the employees of J & J to help us establish a motto and a goal. A couple of wonderful people split $100.00 for coming up with 'Serving the Servants.' This has been our mission statement for some 15 years now and as I look at it I can't see a thing I would want to change. As I was praying about what to say in this article, the only thing God seem to lay on my heart was, make sure you are staying true to what you are called to do? Then I realized that I couldn't answer that. You are the judge. If we are, thank the Lord for it. If we are not, please contact me and let me know how we can serve you better.
The second event was about eight years ago when we were preparing for our second Big Apple conference. Pastor Cymbal had helped us arrange for Dr. Warren Weirsbe to be our speaker for the conference. Not being as familiar with him as I should have been, I picked up one of the many books he has written entitled "On Being A Servant of God." I had barley gotten into it when I read the most incredible definition of ministry that I had ever seen. Since being a servant literally means ministering, I reread this definition and had it enlarged on to a poster for the conference:
Ministry takes place when divine resources meet human needs through loving channels to the glory of God
Throughout the book Dr Wiersbe reminds us that Christian service is not something we do for God but something God does in and through us.
God, make J & J Music the servants that You would have us to be. May we never consider persons and situations only in light of their effect upon us. Allow us to serve, but only for Your gain. Create in us a desire to be a place where divine resources meet human needs through loving channels. God may there be no glory except that which goes to You. May we serve daily with the understanding that to serve your chosen servants is the highest calling we could possibly have and know the joy that only comes through serving Jesus. In the name of the only begotten son, Jesus we pray. Amen
